A Time For Listening

As Christmas decorations go up around the Capitol, I am again reminded how quickly this year is coming to a close. While I am busy preparing for the holidays just like you, I am also very busy preparing for next session which is just around the corner.

With the 2017 legislative session only a few short weeks away, preparations are in full swing to ensure we hit the ground running on January 9th. There is a lot that needs to happen behind the scenes and House Republicans are working hard to make sure everything is in place for opening day. Bills are being drafted, committees are being assigned, and our schedules are quickly filling up with meetings.

In mid-November, House Republicans got together at the Capitol to elect leadership and begin initial discussions on some of the issues expected to come up this session. We will meet again in December to further refine our priorities, discuss the budget, and brainstorm potential agenda items. New committee chairs will also be selected this month to lead on certain policy areas.

The most important thing we can do to prepare for session is continue listening to our folks back home. We are committed to putting the needs of Iowans first and listening carefully to what our constituents and other stakeholders want to see happen this upcoming session. We are eager to get to work and put forth legislation that is bold, smart, and a direct reflection of the mandate our constituents have given us.

Iowans have entrusted us with a great responsibility and we are excited about what this session will hold. There is still much to be done and decided before session begins and we are keeping our ears and minds open as we prepare.
