Strong Investment in K-12: House Republicans have consistently made Iowa’s K-12 schools one of our top priorities every year. This proven track record of strong investment in K-12 has led to more teachers, smaller class sizes, and competitive pay for Iowa’s teachers. After a $90 million funding increase was passed in the first 30 days of session, annual investment in Iowa’s schools will top $3.3 billion in the 2019-20 school year. House Republicans also provided funding to further reduce a long-standing per pupil inequity in the school funding formula by $5 per student.
School Infrastructure: One of the top priorities for Iowa schools this session was an extension of the school infrastructure tax, known as SAVE. The SAVE Fund provides critical resources to ensure safe and modern facilities while also delivering significant tax relief to local property taxpayers. SAVE also provides funds to enhance school security, ensure state of the art classroom technology, and address the worker shortage through career academies.
Recruiting High Quality Teachers: Over the last few years, many states have faced a shortage of teachers, including Iowa. In order to address the teacher shortage here, and especially in rural districts, the Legislature passed a bill to attract more teachers by matching graduation standards with neighboring states. This will help fill open positions and ensure highly-qualified educators in Iowa classrooms.
Higher Education Funding: Iowa’s community colleges serve as critical economic engines for local businesses to help train a highly skilled workforce for open careers. House Republicans have always been champions for community colleges and this session was no different, providing them with a significant budget increase to continue meeting the needs of students and employers. Additionally, Iowa’s Regent universities provide students with a great education at tuition rates lower than their peer groups. House Republicans made it a priority to provide Iowa, Iowa State, and UNI with additional resources to continue keeping tuition affordable for Iowa students.
